For centuries all people have had ambitions of their own, whether it’s positive or negative, great or small, but barely anyones ambition was remembered at all. Plays, poems and movies are used to share the ambitions people once had. ‘Ozymandias’, ‘Macbeth’, ‘Gattaca’ and ‘My sisters keeper’ are all connected with one another and the idea of the characters ambition being positive or negative but nothing… in the end.
Ozymandias, a “colossal Wreck, boundless and bare” was once the “king of kings” ,powerful and great, but is now nothing and left lifeless in the sand. The irony of having such vaulting ambition but for it only to be forgotten in the “lone and level sands” is a reoccurring theme throughout the centuries of plays, movies and poems. In the play Macbeth written by Shakespeare the same idea of pointless ambition is displayed, with Macbeth also in the end left to his “dusty death”.
The character Macbeth is strong and secure at the beginning of the play but overtime he deteriorates. He is now weak and vulnerable. Throughout the play Macbeth had an outside influence, Lady Macbeth who fuels his great ambition to become king and have power. Although the outside influence was good, as the play developed Lady Macbeths influence slowly destroys Macbeth and his ambition. He is left to perish. Alike Macbeth, the film “Gattaca” is about a character who’s life has been controlled by outside influencers. Vincent is pushed down by people who tell him he can’t pursue his dream job. Despite everyone telling him he’s unwanted and not worthy Vincent pushes aside the negative opinions and overcomes them even when it may seem anything and everything is against him . Vincent is now thriving and pursuing his dream career.
Vincent was determined to accomplish his goal from the beginning of the film. Although succeeding and reaching his goal, Vincent faced countless obstacles and had to sacrifice a lot to get there. Similar to the film “My Sisters Keeper” about a girl called Kate who has to have her sister sacrifice a lot in order to live. Both characters have success at someone else’s expense, this is common within plays and movies that involve an ambitious character who has some sort of goal. Kate’s sister has to donate her blood, bone marrow and other medical needs for Kate’s life. In the film “Gattaca” Eugene has to donate blood, skin hair and DNA in order for Vincent to be able to live his everyday life and taking the identity of Eugene so he can succeed and complete his goal.
The film “My sisters keeper”, about Kate and her sister Anna who try so hard to keep Kate alive but for Kate only to die in the end. Kate and her family have a positive ambition for Kate to live, through all twists and turns within the film Kate decides she wants to die and stops her sister from donating medical needs for her. Even after all effort made to save Kates life, she dies. Similar to this is Ozymandias who puts his work into being great and having power, but nothing now remains. And after all his work and effort a shattered visage lies which displays the pointlessness of it all.
