Scene summary – R + J project

The play Romeo and Juliet was written by William Shakespeare in the 1500s. It is a romance tragedy which both the main characters kill themselves in the end. The story is set in fair Verona. The prologue tells us that Juliet and Romeo’s families are enemies and that they will both die and end the feud between the two families. Like most of Shakespeare’s plays it starts with a fight to capture the audience or the reader. This is the first fight we see between the two families, the Capulets and Montagues. Romeo is in love with Rosaline and talking about her but he know he will never be with her. Romeo and his friends Benvolio and Mercutio go to a Capulet party which if they are caught they will be killed because Benvolio and Romeo are form the house of Montagues. At the party Romeo meets Juliet and forgets completely about Rosaline. Juliet and Romeo fall in love. During the time at the party Tybalt threatens to kill Romeo, his worst enemy. Later in the night Romeo and Juliet plan to meet and get married in secret because they are supposed to be enemies. After the marriage Tybalt and Romeo fight, Tybalt kills Mercutio, Romeo’s best friend. Romeo then seeks revenge and kills Tybalt, not thinking of the concequences. The prince then finds out Romeo was the killer, they were going to kill him but then realize Romeo did kill Tybalt for them because he killed Mercutio. The prince decides to banish Romeo instead of killing him. Juliet back at home is morning the loss of her dear cousin Tybalt and the loss of Romeo because of his banishment. The nurse calls for Romeo to comfort Juliet so he can spend his last night in Verona with Juliet. He then leaves in the morning. But then Juliet mum wants her to Marry Paris who Juliet really doesn’t like. Juliets mum is unaware that Juliet is already married. Juliet and Paris are due to marry in a few days, Juliet doesn’t know what to do. So she confronts Friar Lawrence, who is the only one that knows about the secret mariage. His plan is to give Juliet a potion that will make her sleep for 40 hours so everyone will think she’s dead, Friar will send a letter to Romeo to let him know the plan. Juliet will wake up in the tomb and Romeo will be there to take her back to Mantua (where he lives now). It was the perfect plan. The first part was going well, Juliet is asleep and everyone thinks she is dead, the second part she is in the tomb. But did the message send? At Juliet’s funeral one of Romeo’s friend comes to tell him the news of Juliet’s death. Romeo has not read the letter so he is going to see Juliet and say his lats goodbye and kill himself. Romeo gets to the tomb and has to fight Paris and kills him he then is with Juliet which he still thinks she is dead. Friar Lawrence is rushing as fast as he can to save the two lovers, obstacles are getting in his way. Romeo kisses Juliet and kills himself. Friar Lawrence gets there seconds too late, Romeo is dead. Juliet wakes up only minutes later to find Romeo dead, Juliet then kills herself because she cant live without her lover.Juliet is dead. The families then come to find their children dead and end the feud after such tragedy.
